European leaders have voiced their backing for U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts towards peace in Ukraine, emphasizing the critical need for “solid security guarantees” for the country.

This was stated in a joint declaration signed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

“Early this morning, President Trump briefed us on his meeting with the Russian president in Alaska that took place on August 15, 2025. The leaders expressed appreciation for President Trump’s endeavors aimed at improving the situation in Ukraine, particularly in halting violence and achieving lasting peace,” the statement read.

“It is crucial for Ukraine to receive solid security guarantees to protect its sovereignty,” the leaders highlighted.

They also welcomed the willingness of the U.S. to provide security guarantees to Ukraine.

“We are prepared to support an active coalition without any restrictions on the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ cooperation with third countries. Russia cannot veto Ukraine’s path towards European integration,” the European leaders emphasized.

“Borders must not change through force,” the joint statement reiterated.

The leaders referenced Trump’s words that "an agreement does not exist until it is signed."

They expressed readiness to collaborate with Trump and Zelensky to organize a trilateral summit under the support of Europe.

“Our support for Ukraine will be ongoing. We are determined to ensure a strong Ukraine and peace,” the statement concluded.

“As long as violence continues in Ukraine, we will maintain pressure on Russia by intensifying sanctions,” the leaders added.

The leaders assured that Ukraine can count on unwavering European solidarity in working towards a peace that will protect its vital security interests.

According to reports, the U.S. president met with Putin at an airbase in Alaska, attended by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special representative Steve Witkoff. Russian attendees included Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Putin's advisor Yuri Ushakov.

After the meeting, Trump remarked in an interview with Fox News that he and Putin agreed on the potential for "territorial exchanges" and security guarantees for Ukraine. He also noted that reaching an agreement depends on President Zelensky.

Trump also had a phone call with Zelensky following his talks with Putin, which included European leaders and NATO representatives.
