US Vice President JD Vance described Russia's demands during peace negotiations as "excessive," asserting that Moscow should not expect to regain territories it has not succeeded in capturing.

Direct Quote: "We anticipated that Russia would make excessive demands, as their perception of the war is that they are winning. Ukrainians are eager for peace, especially after the hardships of recent months. Our stance is clear: we do not want Ukraine to fail. We certainly want Ukraine to remain a sovereign nation, but Russia cannot expect to reclaim territories it has yet to seize, which was part of their initial peace proposal.

Details: Vance also highlighted the significance of Russia and Ukraine engaging in discussions and presenting "specific peace plans." However, he remarked that the US would withdraw from talks if it becomes evident that "the Russians are not participating honestly."

"If that occurs – yes, we will exit. The President will say: we are pulling out of this process," Vance noted.

"This would mean that Russia and Ukraine would have to address the issue independently – without US advice or mediation. I don’t think that would be beneficial for any of us," he emphasized.

Vance added that he believes there have been "some diplomatic breakthroughs" in resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Direct Quote: "We must strive to bring these parties closer together to achieve lasting peace. We are not there yet. We will work on this until we decide that further progress is impossible. And then we will withdraw."
