Details: Coordination for the trip is currently underway, and he aims to "do everything possible within the European Union to ensure a lasting ceasefire after the upcoming weekend so that a peace agreement can be reached with Russia," Merz stated during his visit to Paris.

The Chancellor emphasized that there is one key question at hand: whether Russia is ready to agree to a 30-day ceasefire.

Merz also linked the issue of security guarantees from Germany for Kyiv with the need to first reach an agreement on a long-term ceasefire in Ukraine.

According to the Chancellor, it is crucial for the United States to continue participating in this process, "as well as in further providing security guarantees for Ukraine," and "for Americans to stay engaged in this matter."

He expressed hope that the U.S. "will continue to fulfill its commitments" within NATO and regarding Ukraine.

Background: Friedrich Merz started his official visits in Paris and will then head to Warsaw.

On Friday, May 9, Merz is expected in Brussels, where he will meet with the President of the European Council and the head of the European Commission.
