Recently, a team of volunteer archaeologists discovered two gold Celtic coins in the wetland of Berenfels, located in northern Switzerland.
This was reported by LiveScience.

«The coins were minted nearly 2300 years ago, making them part of a very small group of just over 20 known specimens of the oldest Celtic coins from Switzerland,» – said archaeologists from Archaeology Baselland.

One coin is a stater (an ancient coin that was in circulation in Ancient Greece and Lydia from around the early 5th century BC to the mid-1st century AD, and was also significant for Celtic tribes), weighing 7.8 g, while the other weighs 1.86 g.

It is noted in the publication that the term «stater» comes from ancient Greek coins. As mercenaries, Celts on the European mainland increasingly received Greek coins as payment by the end of the 4th century BC. These coins later served as «inspiration» for Celtic coins in the early 3rd century BC. In this case, gold staters minted during the reign of Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great, were imitated.

Both coins feature the profile of the Greek god Apollo on the obverse (front side), while the reverse (back side) displays a chariot pulled by two horses.

It is worth mentioning that the two found coins were slightly altered compared to the Greek originals. For instance, on the reverse of the smaller coin, under the horses, there is a triple spiral. This symbol, known as a triskelion, is commonly found in Celtic art.
Both coins will be displayed in Basel starting March 2026.

As reported by Ukrinform, off the coast of Florida, known as the «Treasure Coast», a team of divers from a shipwreck recovery company discovered a long-lost Spanish treasure worth an estimated $1 million.
