In Nuremberg, Germany, the discovery of a World War II aviation bomb forced 21,000 residents to evacuate their homes. According to DW, the bomb was successfully deactivated in about an hour.
Before the disarmament operation, residents were required to leave their homes, and all roads within 800 meters of the bomb were closed.
City officials stated that this operation was the largest evacuation ever conducted in Nuremberg for such incidents.
The bomb, weighing approximately 450 kilograms, was found during construction work in the Grossreuth area.
On Friday evening, hundreds of emergency service workers were deployed in the area for safety control, including 500 firefighters, 250 rescue volunteers, 60 civil protection staff, and over 100 police officers.
During World War II, Nuremberg experienced numerous bombings by Allied forces as it was a significant economic and infrastructure hub. The most notable bombing occurred on January 2, 1945, when 521 Royal Air Force bombers dropped 6,000 high-explosive bombs and a million incendiary devices, killing over 1,800 people and nearly completely destroying the old part of the city.
