The National Bank of Ukraine has announced the release of a new silver coin titled "Archangel Michael" as part of the series "Spiritual Treasures of Ukraine". This was reported by the regulator's press service on Facebook.
The coin was presented at the National Museum in Lviv named after Andrey Sheptytsky as part of the cultural-artistic project "Archangel Michael - Angel of Victory". This release is dedicated to one of the most revered heavenly patrons of the Ukrainian people – Archangel Michael.
"The National Bank is pleased to join this wonderful project, as the issuance is dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the founding of the National Museum in Lviv and the 160th anniversary of the birth of its founder – Andrey Sheptytsky, the spiritual protector of the Ukrainian nation. We hope our new coin will serve as another sign of the spiritual strength of Ukrainians, a symbol of heavenly protection and faith in victory, reminding us of the inner light that guides Ukrainians through the toughest trials," said Yevhen Kondratenko, head of the numismatic products and cash operations department of the NBU.
The design of the new coin is based on the image of Archistrategos Michael from the deacon's gates of the Zhykiv iconostasis, created by the prominent Ukrainian master Ivan Rutkovych at the end of the 17th century.
The obverse features the royal gates of the Zhykiv iconostasis with a prayer to Archangel Michael. Above the gates is a stylized arch symbolizing the light that conquers darkness. At the top, the inscription reads: "Who is like God" – a traditional address to the archistrategos.
The reverse depicts the image of Archangel Michael from the Zhykiv iconostasis, executed using local gilding and color printing. The archangel appears in military armor, holding a sword and scales, standing on clouds. The background of the reverse is adorned with a plant ornament in the baroque style.
The denomination of the coin is 10 UAH. The coin will be available for purchase starting November 11 on the NBU's numismatic product online store and at distributing banks.
