The Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, is heading to the United States for crucial strategic discussions. This marks his first visit since the beginning of President Donald Trump's second term.
This information comes from Hurriyet Daily News and is reported by "European Truth".
During his trip to Washington, scheduled for March 25-26, Fidan is set to hold strategic talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Unnamed sources among Turkish diplomats have indicated that the discussions will focus on important strategic steps to enhance bilateral relations.
Before this visit, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had his first phone conversation with Trump.
Key topics expected to be discussed include efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine, recent developments in Syria, and the evolution of bilateral relations, particularly defense cooperation. Fidan is also likely to raise the issue of lifting American sanctions imposed in 2020 and Turkey's return to the F-35 program, from which it was excluded after purchasing Russian S-400 defense systems.
Negotiations regarding sanctions relief and fighter jets were pivotal reasons why Turkey delayed agreeing to Finland and Sweden's NATO membership.
Fidan plans to remind about Turkey's peace initiatives over the years and convey that Turkey is ready to support U.S. efforts to achieve a ceasefire leading to a lasting peace agreement.
He will also call on the U.S. to lift sanctions on Syria and collaborate on humanitarian assistance for the country.
Discussions will also include cooperation against ISIS and oversight of prisons in eastern Syria. The Turkish minister will urge the U.S. to "influence Israel" for a sustainable ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
