October 27 marks an important celebration in Ukraine — Ukrainian Language Day.
This date was established on November 6, 1997, following an initiative by President Leonid Kuchma, who signed a decree to celebrate Ukrainian literacy and language.
Until 2023, the holiday was celebrated on November 9, honoring the memory of Nestor the Chronicler according to the old calendar. The shift to a new church calendar moved the celebration to October 27.
Every year, various events promote the Ukrainian language. A traditional highlight is the National Unity Dictation, which this year will be led by writer Yevheniya Kuznetsova, with actress Natalia Sumskaya reading the text.
Last year, over half a million participants joined the dictation from around the world, indicating a growing interest in the Ukrainian language.
