On Thursday, October 2, Latvia experienced a significant cyber attack that disrupted the operation of government websites. According to Delfi, this was a DDoS attack.
The attack impacted the State Revenue Service, the Latvija.lv administrative services portal, as well as various ministry and local government sites. Users were also unable to access the e-signature site eParaksts.lv.
By Thursday afternoon, representatives from LVRTC confirmed that the affected websites were back online. The web pages were down for approximately one hour, with some sites being unavailable for around one hour and twenty minutes. Certain resources were accessible but operated slowly.
Investigations into the causes of the attack are ongoing. After the analysis is complete, LVRTC intends to provide more detailed comments on this cyber incident. It is also noted that LVRTC is collaborating with Cert.lv to determine the real reasons behind the attack.
Since the implementation of the obligation to report cyber attacks on critical infrastructure in Switzerland six months ago, 164 cyber incidents have been recorded.
