A significant wildfire has erupted in southern France, near the Spanish border, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.

According to Associated Press, around 1,800 firefighters have been deployed to combat the blaze that ignited on Tuesday in the village of Ribot. As of Wednesday, the fire remained «very active», with adverse weather conditions complicating the efforts, stated local authorities.

One person lost their life in their home, while nine others were injured, including seven firefighters. Additionally, at least one individual is reported missing.

The fire has consumed an area exceeding 12,000 hectares, surpassing the size of Paris. This incident marks the largest wildfire in France this summer.

Local residents and tourists have been urged to stay indoors unless evacuation orders are issued. Two campsites have been evacuated for safety reasons.

This summer has seen several significant fires in Southern Europe, with scientists warning that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of heat and drought, making the region more vulnerable to wildfires.
