At least 54 migrants lost their lives when a boat carrying around 150 people sank off the coast of Yemen due to inclement weather on Sunday.

This was reported by Reuters.

Details: According to health officials in the region, many individuals are considered missing.

The boat capsized near the Ahwar area in Yemen's southern province of Abyan, along the Arabian Sea.

A representative from the regional health service reported that 10 out of approximately 150 people on board were rescued – nine Ethiopians and one Yemeni – but many remain unaccounted for. Two medics stated that rescuers are still searching for survivors.

The International Organization for Migration indicates that Yemen continues to experience a significant influx of illegal migrants from Africa.

Every year, migrants cross the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait on precarious boats to reach Gulf countries in search of work.

The International Organization for Migration labels the route from the Horn of Africa to Yemen as "one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world." According to the organization, over 60,000 migrants arrived last year.
