The European Council has approved a new law that will enable the implementation of an innovative digital entry-exit system (EES) at borders within the next six months. This initiative aims to boost the efficiency of border control at the external borders of the European Union.

Reports indicate that this new system will also apply to Ukrainian citizens.
The EES will digitally record entries and exits, including passport data, fingerprints, and facial images of citizens from non-EU countries traveling to EU member states for short stays.
"Ensuring robust protection of our external borders is crucial for the European Union. The new entry-exit system will help us guarantee that citizens from non-EU countries comply with our regulations while traveling to Europe. This will make our borders safer and border control more effective," – stated Kaare Dybvad Bek, Denmark's Minister of Immigration and Integration, who currently holds the presidency of the European Council.
With this system, relevant authorities, from border guards to law enforcement agencies, will have access to data that allows them to verify the identity of third-country nationals and whether they are adhering to the allowed duration of stay in the Schengen Area. Consequently, the EES will significantly reduce the likelihood of identity fraud and overstaying in the Schengen territory.
