The Security Service of Ukraine has announced the discovery of a spy network operating for Hungarian military intelligence.
Spy Activities in Transcarpathia: What We Know
As a result of coordinated operations in Transcarpathia, two individuals linked to this network were detained. The primary goal of their activities was to gather intelligence regarding military facilities in the region. The agents were tasked with identifying vulnerabilities in defense systems and analyzing the political sentiments of the local populace. Hungarian intelligence was interested in the population's reactions to a potential deployment of Hungarian troops.
It was established that the coordinator of the detainees was an operative from the Hungarian military intelligence, whose identity has already been confirmed.
One of the agents was a 40-year-old former military personnel. According to the SBU, he was recruited back in 2021, but was activated only in October 2024.
The traitor was given assignments to study local sentiments and gather information regarding the potential introduction of peacekeepers, including Hungarian military; investigate the black market for weapons and assess the migration patterns of Hungarians in the region; and document military units and their equipment.
The SBU documented that the agent was conducting reconnaissance on the location of defense forces and the coordinates of missile defense systems in the region.
After compiling the data, the agent traveled to Hungary to report to his coordinator, using a false document claiming to care for a sick father.
During their meeting, the Hungarian intelligence officer provided the agent with cash for completing his tasks, including finding new informants.
The SBU found that the agent attempted to recruit at least two more individuals to expand his network.
In March 2025, the counterintelligence of the SBU documented a second meeting between the agent and his coordinator. This time, he received a phone with special software for secure communication.
Among the new tasks assigned to him was identifying vehicles belonging to security forces in Transcarpathia.
Additionally, the agent was to gather information about Ukrainian Armed Forces casualties and events at the front, for which he had already found a suitable contact within the military.
The second detainee was a former servicewoman who left her unit in 2025.
According to available information, her assignments included informing the Hungarian intelligence about the presence of aircraft and helicopters in Transcarpathia.
What Punishment Awaits the Spies?
During searches, mobile phones and other physical evidence confirming their subversive activities were seized.
The investigators of the SBU have informed both individuals of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed in a state of war). They are currently in custody and face life imprisonment.
