Every year on May 18, museums around the world open their doors to the public to emphasize the importance of cultural heritage and history. In Kyiv, numerous exciting events, thematic exhibitions, and free entry to state museums are planned for this day.
Why is entry free on International Museum Day?
The International Museum Day, celebrated on May 18, aims to highlight the significance of museums in preserving cultural traditions and educating society. This initiative was launched by ICOM in 1977. Each year, a new theme is chosen that focuses on various aspects of museum activities, from innovations to inclusivity.
In 2025, the theme will be "The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities," emphasizing the role of museums in the evolution of society facing significant changes. Museums are becoming not only preservation sites but also spaces for innovative ideas and community development.
In Ukraine, the celebration of International Museum Day has been actively observed since the early 2000s, with more institutions participating each year. Museums offer free visits, thematic tours, quests, workshops, and other events, making this holiday an important cultural phenomenon, especially in Kyiv.
