The Security Service of Ukraine uncovered and halted an assassination plot against an officer of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense in the capital.
During a complex operation in Kyiv, an FSB agent was apprehended while planning to attack a Ukrainian soldier in the city center.
The killer was caught "in the act" as he drew a pistol and aimed it at the military officer in a popular establishment.
It was revealed that the perpetrator was a 28-year-old citizen from Central Asia, recruited by the enemy in his homeland while seeking easy money through Telegram.
Following orders from the aggressor, the agent arrived in Ukraine disguised as a tourist and initially stayed in Pervomaisk in the Mykolaiv region.
There, he purchased several smartphones and SIM cards, which he frequently changed for secure communication with the FSB.
Later, the foreigner moved to Kyiv, receiving from his handler photos of the potential "target," its coordinates, and the location of the stash where he retrieved the pistol with ammunition.
For executing this crime, he was promised $50,000 and legalization in one of the EU countries.
At the scene of the assassination attempt, the perpetrator was found with the weapon and ammunition as well as a smartphone containing evidence of his contacts with the FSB.
SBU investigators charged the agent under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  •  Part 2 of Article 15, Part 2 of Article 115 (completed attempt to commit murder);
  •  Part 1 of Article 111-2 (aiding an aggressor state);
  •  Part 1 of Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons).

The criminal is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
The operation was conducted by the Counterintelligence Department and the SBU Office in the Mykolaiv region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor's office.
