A horrific traffic accident occurred in the Poltava region, claiming the lives of two 17-year-old sisters. The driver, who is a police officer, ran over the girls with his Hyundai Tucson while they were walking along the roadside. This incident took place on the evening of November 30 in the city of Karlivka. 
According to the Poltava regional prosecutor's office, both sisters succumbed to their injuries at the scene. 
After the incident, the officer fled the scene but returned shortly after. Initial reports suggest that he exhibited signs of being under the influence of alcohol. He has since been detained. 
The prosecutor's office has initiated a pre-trial investigation under Part 4 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, concerning violations of traffic safety rules by a person driving under the influence, resulting in the death of multiple individuals. 
The Poltava police department confirmed that the sergeant was off duty at the time of the accident. 
The regional police leadership has promptly initiated an internal investigation.
