The counterintelligence unit of the Security Service of Ukraine has apprehended two individuals working for the Russian military intelligence, commonly known as GRU, who assisted in coordinating attacks in the Donetsk region.
Occupying forces recruited local residents who called for the complete occupation of the area on social media.
After recruitment, these agents operated independently, spying in various frontline areas and reporting to their handlers in private chats.
One of the detainees is a 49-year-old resident of Sloviansk who guided Russian artillery towards the locations of Ukrainian troops.
To conceal his identity before carrying out tasks, he wore military gear and posed as a defender of Ukraine.
The other suspect is a 66-year-old resident of Kramatorsk, who was recruited by Russian operatives through a connection with a militant from Russian military groups on the eastern front.
This agent passed on information about the movements of Ukrainian military checkpoints through his intermediary.
The SBU uncovered both offenders and implemented measures to secure the positions of Ukrainian defenders in areas of enemy reconnaissance activity.
After documenting the actions of the Russian agents, both were arrested.
SBU investigators informed them of the charges according to two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- Part 2 of Article 111 (high treason committed under martial law);
- Part 3 of Article 114-2 (unauthorized dissemination of information about the movement of the Armed Forces of Ukraine under martial law).
The detainees are currently in custody, facing life imprisonment and property confiscation. The measures were conducted by SBU employees under the procedural guidance of the Donetsk regional prosecutor's office.
